iPhone in the Freezer – Sorta Worked

May 27, 2017 by Rick Howington 26 Comments

I put my iPhone in the freezer and it helped fix some issues.  Here’s my iPhone freezer story.

My iPhone had been the perfect companion. I even found myself bragging about my Apple device like an annoying fanboy. But all good things come to an end. It started with WiFi problems  (the on-off switched was grayed out), apps would crash, and sometimes email would “spin” and never retrieve.

I thought my happy iPhone days were over until I found the iPhone freezer trick. Hard to believe this helped, but putting my iPhone in the freezer for about 30 minutes helped fixed some of the problems. Here are the cold, hard facts from my iPhone freezer experiences.

Here are the cold, hard facts from my iPhone freezer experience.

  • First, power down the iPhone
  • Put iPhone in a zip-lock bag
  • Put zip-lock in the freezer
  • Find something to do for about 30 minutes
Here’s is suggestion – Talk to a neighbor (in person, because your phone’s in the freezer)
  • Retrieve your iPhone
  • Power-up
FYI – the screen may be foggy from frost. It will go away.

After doing this I could connect to WiFi and my apps worked! I was amazed!
However, after about 20 – 30 minutes I lost the WiFi connection and could not reconnect (spinning wheel on WiFi screen). But the good news is, the freezer tricked seem to fix the crashing apps and email issues.

And now a warning – after rebooting my iPhone it started having the same problems, the most annoying being the crashing apps.  But after another 30 minutes in the deep freeze, my iPhone apps worked and I got another 30 minutes of WiFi.

After many hours reading iPhone support threads, the official solution is to get a new phone.  But the freezer trick can help if you don’t have the time (or the cash) to go to the Apple store and talk to a kid at the genius bar (or get a new iPhone).

Have you tried freezing your iPhone?  What’s your iPhone freezer story?

Rick, I heard about another solution for iPhone issues: get an Android phone. 😉

Thanks Shawn! Bet you don’t have to put your Android phone in the freezer to make it work! 🙂 Good to hear from you!

Argh I know …my iPhone is in the freezer right now!. Is there a permanent fix to this wifi issue?

The freezer is just a band-aid and a sign the phone is about to die. You should back-up all your iPhone data and get a new phone. The iPhone 5c is a good and affordable choice.

It’s a forced upgrade by Apple. It boggles the mind. I should want to upgrade as I’m inspired or ultra brainwashed by the new product, not as a forced upgrade. Apple is going downhill fast with the iPhone issues they created, Thunderbolt garbage, and new OS systems that also render IMacs almost useless. My days with Apple are fast coming to an end.

the freezer does work but only for a short time, my iPhone wont respond to my touch and when it does its only for a minute or so … I remembered hearing about the freezer trick and thought.. what the hell … it cant hurt to try and it worked… too bad its only a band aid for my iPhone 6 plus … not to mention I brought it to tech bench today TWICE, new screen new battery and still the same damn problem!!! its 46 days over a year old and when contacting apple support they filled me in on that fact and basically told me …. my warranty has run out and good luck ! lol I’m starting to think about never getting another iPhone again, smh….$200 later and still the same damn problem… why would the freezer make it work? and if being cold is the answer …why not create a case that keeps the iPhone COOL!!!! there’s an idea!!! I feel so disconnected and broke ..lol

My i4S is 4.75 years old. I love it and realize it is time to go. Last weekend phone hit the ground. Screen went black. I could still talk to Siri and she still frustrated me most the time, but she would make calls for me, give me verbal directions and I could answer incoming calls. No text, no screen, etc. I got to a hotel with fridge and freezer. Powered down the phone, into the freezer for an hour. Brought it out, let it thaw bit, plugged in the charger and it worked. Still working. But it is time to go.

My iPhone 5s died again today. It would not charge. Last time it righted itself after 24 hours of misery for me. Today, after it died, it stated to overheat so I popped it into the fridge for 1/2 hour. Not in a bag. It’s been good as gold so far. It isn’t that old.

My 5s crashed for no apparent reason and would not turn back on. Meant to leave it in the freezer for 30 minutes… Four hours later I retrieved it, let sit for an hour to thaw, plugged it in to charge, and like magic it now works better than it did before. **Disclaimer** I’m not tech savvy and have no clue as to the long term consequences of freezing the phone.

Apple haven’t got a monopoly on this “freeza” phone trick.
I left my android in the freezer for two weeks(I forgot about it) .
It worked perfectly until it defrosted, then it was back to its old trick of not opening.
    Pile of Chinese junk.

Yes I’ve been using a hand me down iPad Air 2 and the greyed out WiFi is very apparent. But I keep in the freezer for 15 minutes and it’s good for the day until it goes to sleep and the WiFi shuts off… It’s routine for me at this point. It’s worth it for me I hate Apple the monopolizing tricks and there playing dumb routine… But let me tell you the iPad is a great f****** piece of machinery and 15 minutes a day and so bad

Thank you for the tip. My iPhone 6 (among other issues I’ve had with it over the past few months) has been stuck on a black screen with the white loading wheel for the last 3 hours or so. I remember my phone’s battery dying faster in the cold, so I figured if I left it in the freezer for a bit, the battery would quickly die and I can try recharging and rebooting. Good to know this could possibly fix other issues I’ve had with it as well.

I have a phone with touch disease and how no other option but to freeze it to use it to get it backed up whilst I wait for my replacement phone works until it goes to sleep and then I must refreeze.

I think this is just trolling. How will it work if the cip is fried? Just sell it on ebay, there are people who can fix them, instead of putting in freezer and ending up fucking the device up. I was so stupid that i believed the guy, put my ipad in freezer and it didnt fiix it but it F—- up the battery.

The freezer trick is working for me for only a few minutes and now i discovered my iphone 7 has a hardware corruption so i have to send it to the Apple care centre to repair for it. BTW if after repair i still can get back my data inside my phone? because the data inside my phone is very important to me. so i wish that got someone can tell me about it?

Omg . I can’t believe this actually worked. I didn’t you say freezer bag nor did I power down my phone. All I know is my phone was overheating and I got the idea just to stick it in the freezer so I did. It stayed in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes and when I took it out everything was working perfectly. Before I put in the freezer half the screen didn’t work and my home button was not working as well. Now everything on my phone works perfectly and guess what… It doesn’t overheat.

    Truly great hack
