March Madness and Patch Tuesday

March 7, 2009 by Rick Howington Leave a Comment

I realize that operating system patches are about as exciting as new plumbing.  But if you can imagine your house without working pipes, you get a picture (and smell) of patch importance, especially if you are a Windows/Vista user.  The patches coming down the pipe for March include a core update deemed critical to your PC’s operating system plumbing.

In my blog post “A Fat Patch Tuesday” (https://biologyoftechnology.com/?p=20) I tell you about patch Tuesday.

As we head into the March you should pay attentions to looming PC updates.  But now, it’s time to jump to my “and now a warning” segment.  This month’s batch of patches updates the core operating system.   So what does this mean?  It would be like Joe the plumber replacing the main pipe to your house.  Since the main pipe feeds every facet and drain you will want to make sure everything works after the change.  A core update is the same.   In theory, everything should work after the update…in theory.

These core patches drive IT people mad bringing a whole new meaning to March madness.   One reason is that they require a reboot.  Another reason is like that new pipe from Joe the plumber, they have to test everything.  For most people, you should be okay.  But to avoid your own personal March madness, you should make sure you have all your data backed-up.
