If you have not checked your computers for DNS Changer malware, then you have until July 9, 2012. To check your Windows or Mac machine, go to the following website:
It only takes a few seconds. If you do not check before the deadline and your PC is infected, then come July 9th you will not be able to access any websites, including the one with the antidote.
What is DNS Changer?
The DNS Malware infects the Windows and Mac operating systems to redirect to fake websites. (sorry Apple zealots, but you are not immune.) The insidiousness of DNS Changer is that the counterfeits could look like the real website. However, these bogus site can infect your computer with some really bad stuff!
The DNS Changer Back Story
On November 8, 2011, the FBI, the NASA-OIG and Estonian police arrested several cyber criminals in “Operation Ghost Click”. The criminals operated under the company name “Rove Digital”, and distributed DNS changing viruses, variously known as TDSS, Alureon, TidServ and TDL4 viruses.
Why is July 9, 2012 the Deadline?
July 9, 2012 is the date that the FBI pulls the plug on the Domain Name System (DNS) servers that have been kept running as a safety net for people who were infected by the malware, and as a result were being directed to bogus DNS servers. So if you’ve been surfing the Web on an machine infected with DNS Changer, you’ve been doing so courtesy of the FBI. But by court order the FBI has to discontinue operating these DNS servers on July 9, 2012
Please make a few minutes to make sure you are not infected.
